Back Pain Q&A

What is back pain?

Back pain is aching, stiffness, or discomfort that affects any part of your spine the vertebrae, ligaments, muscles, or discs.

Your spine features dozens of hard and soft tissues that work together to support a full range of motion. Unfortunately, the natural aging process and general wear-and-tear can trigger discomfort that affects your range of motion and quality of life.

What are the symptoms of back pain?

The symptoms of back pain include:

  • Dull, aching sensation
  • Stabbing or shooting sensation that extends into the legs or feet
  • Inability to stand up without discomfort
  • Difficulty walking
  • Decreased range of motion

You might also have difficulty sleeping or working if you suffer from chronic back pain.

How is back pain diagnosed?

To diagnose back pain, Dr. Goodwin reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, if the pain extends to other parts of your body, and if it’s worse during certain activities.

Dr. Goodwin completes a physical exam. He tests your ability to stand and walk, checks your reflexes and leg strength, and assesses your ability to feel sensations in your feet. If necessary, Dr. Goodwin might also order blood work and a urinalysis. If needed, he’ll order diagnostic imaging, like X-rays, to check for underlying health problems or fractures.
